Ask any fly fisher and they will have their own take on this! Here’s the LLFF basic guide to getting started.
First of all, don’t overdo it! There is so much out there that tackle manufacturers would have us believe we need – we don’t!
1. A Fly Rod – A good quality 9ft 5 weight rod will be perfect to get you started.
2. Reel – To match the rod weight – A reel that will hold a 5-weight line!
3. A good quality fly line – A 5 weight, weight forward floating line is perfect.
Don’t ignore good quality starter sets – they are value for money
4. A Net – something big enough to hold the size of fish you are likely to catch and is easy to carry. A long extendable handle is useful too!
5. A bag to carry everything in – it doesn’t have to be expensive!
6. A selection of flies – Suitable for the water you are fishing. Our advice is to ask at the fishery or ask fishers who regularly get on the water!
7. A priest – Even if you are fishing catch and release its good practice to carry a priest.
8. Forceps/Debarbing Pliers – 5” are fine!
9. ‘Mud’ – For degreasing your leader and tippet.
10. Tapered Leaders – 9ft leaders are fine. 5X are our go to size!
11. Spools of Tippet – You don’t need loads! A spool of 4X, 5X and 6X Co Polymer will do.
